Currently, we provide refuse collection service to all academic, administrative and housing buildings on campus. Collection schedules are based on container size, volume and building use.
Certain materials are prohibited from disposal at the landfill by State Law, and departmental practice. Additionally, there are materials that are discouraged from being placed in refuse containers by Michigan State University, as they may have a value, or a reuse or recycling potential.
Their are two (2) separate types of containers used to collect refuse from campus buildings...front-load and roll-off.
A front-load container has a lid(s), and is dumped into one of our Front-Load Packer Trucks. Several of these bins are dumped into our trucks and then transported to the landfill. They can be free-standing, or connected to a small-compactor.
A roll-off container typically has an open top (except if it is attached to a compactor) and, here at MSU, has a volume 10 yards or more. These containers are usually reserved for bulky items and construction/demolition projects, though some are used as regular refuse containers for certain buildings.
